John's 4-6 loss, 30/11/15

MVPs: Luke Smith and Gabe Greening

DCU played John’s this week, in a match that will go down in the history of Downing College Ultimate. A match that finished 1 hour and 40 minutes after it started, a match played in 50 mph winds, a match with a 40 minute long point (described as “both the best point and the worst point” – L. Asman, 2015), a match nearly called off for bad light, a match reminiscent of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpBtq4kwmP8) but ended in defeat. We won the toss and started downwind on defence, coming out with a junk zone. Unfortunately, we immediately conceded a break and lost the following upwind point to go 2-0 down. Following side-line consultation (thanks Tejas!), we switched to a man defence, trying to shut down their best two players. We won the next downwind, and followed that by breaking back to level the scores at 2-2. We traded points until we reached 4-4, with DCU going downwind. Time went shortly after the point started, but despite many trips to John’s endzone we couldn’t find the final pass to take the point. Whenever we turned John’s near our endzone we played huck and D. The point lasted so long that Joey, Gabe and I gave nicknames to the three players we rotated marking (Han Solo, Maroon 5 and Bib-elicious). Eventually, 40 minutes later, after the wind caught a dump pass, John’s turned the disc on our endzone line and broke us for a 5-4 lead. They won the resulting downwind point for the 6-4 victory.

Thank you to everyone who came and braved the conditions! And thanks Tejas and Tasha for a great sideline!
