DCU 10 - Chinstrap Penguins 9 (26th Oct)

Wagoin DCU,

DCU 10 - 9 Chinstrap Penguins
MVP: Tasha Smith

It was a big day for college league ultimate today with several games occurring simultaneously. However there is only one you should concern yourself with: DCU vs Chinstrap Penguins. With various injuries and illnesses our team was whittled down to 9 players. We are very proud of the DCU women (Tasha, Humaira, Katie, Hannah & Aimée) who went to Nottingham for a beginners tournament this weekend and won the spirit prize!!! but it meant that we were a little women-less. Luckily Tasha came back a day early and was 'keen as mustard to kick some penguin ass' *. Oh and we were also missing a captain.

Bryn put out a reasonably mediocre pitch but was later assured by Kau that it broke regulations. Once the cones were placed more appropriately the game began, with DCU starting on O. Twas a windy day and some tight handler play from Bryn and Matlab put Penguins 2-0 up. We were a little less comfortable in the wind, changing between virt and ho for O and sticking to good honest man defence**. We traded points reaching half behind 5-7. It was a great day for our latest recruit Johnny who scored 3 of the aforementioned points. After half, Penguins broke away via a combination of good catches and lucky hucking. It didn't help that we were regularly forced to 6 either, but our iron woman Tasha kept at it with great enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Saggy retired to the sideline with a back injury.

Time went at 9-5 Penguins: it was on - first to 10 points wins. At this point we opted to powerline with myself, Kau, Clackers, Ohad (yes Ohad officially plays for DCU now), Hayes and Tasha. 6 vs 7 wasn't optimal for attempting a 5-point streak but we persevered. Before we knew it, it was 9-6 then 9-7 then 9-8. Then i was a bit of a retard and jumped for the disc, missing it entirely and completely munching my back in the process. I tried to play on but it wasn't happening so i called injury - but who would replace me? As if by magic, a mustard-jumper-wearing, sleeping-bag-caressing angel appeared: Mark had returned to PP by coach from his friend's 21st. After acquiring some boots the DCU line was once more complete and i believe Mark went on to score the remaining 2 points, securing our victory. 10-9 DCU.

Tasha was voted MVP for her skill, determination and perseverance: few ironwoman their second ever ultimate match.

Thanks to all who came,
