... feel I'm forgetting someone... if this is the case I'm truly sorry I saw half of the Lions game beforehand and all you beautiful people just blur into one big purple mass in my memory.
After arriving in dribs and drabs to a surprisingly windless Churchill (this had to be the most moderate the weather has ever been in the history of Churchill pitches), Julia lead the warm up and lost the toss. Eagles' captains seem doomed to lose the toss but as long as we keep winning who gives a flying feather.
Despite starting on defence, we proceeded to get an early break and follow up with another point over Churchill in what was a bit of a sucker punch for this fresher heavy Churchill side. They bit back however, using their experienced girl and surprisingly competent freshers to good effect and trading with DCU for a few points. With some solid handling and a helping huck from Sam or Nick on occasion however, we maintained our lead.
Soon enough Churchill Beta threw up a zone, which slowed us down a little bit. Soon however, our handlers were shredding their cup and utilising quick unders from the mids to good effect, allowing us to get our deep shots off once more. Special mention must go to our newer players here, with James and Connor bursting through their wall to receive quick discs, then looking for that crucial quick dump so the handler achieved a power position through their wall. When it worked we looked slick. Our wings worked well too, dragging men deep when necessary and keeping their marks busy.
Soon enough, we took half at 7-4. When we took to the field once more, Churchill came out strong and put one past us but we replied in kind with 3 of our own, winning the game 10-5. A solid result against probably our toughest opposition yet (their zone was better than John's :O ), and one that was well deserved. From a Captain's point of view it was nice to see the old (Nick, Sam) integrating with the middle aged (Janman, Kenny, Louis, Julia, Camilla) and the new (Connor, James, Anthie, Matt). There was some real synergy at times and our newbies' throws were looking great so let's keep that up!
