Our mixed-experience Lions squad made a strong start to the college league season, reaching the hard cap of 13 points on a breezy Saturday afternoon on Parker's Piece. ChrEmBroke showed up with impressive numbers and enthusiasm, compared to a fairly small Lions squad, but our greater experience and disk skills resulted in the points quickly resolving in our favour. Highlights of the match included Callahans for Tejas and Gonzo, point blocks for everyone, and some calm play and great throws and catches from our freshers - Tom, Mark and Aimee. Despite our numbers disadvantage, and having to stop the game fairly often to explain the rules to the beginners, some solid defence and clinical offence saw the match finished before time was up. The post match call "Evolution" was enjoyed by all with Tom Talbot being the last remaining egg. DCU will soon be facing tougher opposition in college league, so this was a good warm up match for later in the season.
Thanks to everyone who played, you all did brilliantly, and special mention to our women Helen and Aimee who almost iron-womanned the match. Our MVP was fresher Mark Selby -- an excellent first match, including scores, assists, and Ds.
What was obvious in this match was that ultimate is not all about athleticism -- although ChrEmBroke were fast and tall and willing to bid for anything (and pulled off some impressive Ds -- maybe even more so than us), without disc handling skills or any coherent tactics they really struggled to get anything out of the match. That's why DCU emphasises throwing -- keep practising that forehand everyone!
